WW1 Letter to Parents

Dear Mum and Dad,
I wish I could be with you right now but I cant.  I have made my choice to help the soldiers in World War 1.  In the war, there are many things you can do to help.  I have been placed in a trench by my Captain.

In the trench, it is very horrible.  It is like living in a toilet!  I have the worst job in the trenches.  I have to clean the trench toilets.  Very horrible.

In the trenches it is great because I can talk to my comrades and discuss what they will do after the war.  In the trenches, I get quite hungry from time to time.  The food I get is limited.  I also don't get much sleep.  We have shifts.  Some soldiers sleep while the others watch the battlefield.  Then when they had enough sleep, they change over.

We also got provided with cards and treats.  I hope Marzia sends some chocolates down for me.  That’d be great.  Well, I hope I get to see you at the end of the month.  When I come, be prepared.

Love your son, Samuel
